Amazon's Kindle Keyboard - The Perfect Gift For The Avid Readers In Your Life
An
Amazon Kindle Keyboard is the perfect gift for avid readers. My wife
bought me one for my last birthday and it's one of the best gifts I've ever
received. I read at least three books a week - sometimes more. The problem
is, they take up a fair amount of storage space as I tend to keep and re-read
them. My Amazon Kindle Keyboard Wi-Fi resolves this issue as it can
store up to 3500 books in it's 4 Gb memory.
OK. Let's see what's so great about the Amazon Kindle Keyboard eReader.
The first thing I was pleased to find was how simple it was to get the Wi-Fi connection set up. Within a couple of minutes I was able to connect to the Kindle Store and start buying books - straight from the Kindle. These downloads took about a minute to download each title I bought through the Amazon Whispernet system, and I was able to start reading the first title I bought within a couple of minutes whilst the rest of the titles were downloading.

Reading books on the Kindle Keyboard is a joy. It's a comfotable size to handle and I can adjust the print size so that I don't have use my reading glasses. Mine came with a special Kindle cover (sold separately) which makes it handle more like a physical book. Although the background colour is not bright white, the E Ink Pearl display is clear and sharp and very easy to read, even in bright sunlight, and I don't get screen fatigue like I do when I'm in front of my PC for an extended period. Page turning is achieved via two buttons on either side of the reading screen turning pages forwards and backwards either left handed or right handed. And if you get fed up with reading you can plug in your headphones (sold separately) and have the text to voice function take over and read to you.
Another really neat feature is that the device bookmarks my place in the book I am reading when I turn it off - no hunting for the book or page when I turn it back on. Downloading books from the Kindle Store is quick and easy. It can be done either from the Kindle Keyboard itself or via your Amazon account on the internet. In either case your books are immediately downloaded to your Kindle if your Wi-Fi is switched on. And when you purchase books from the Kindle Store, they are automatically backed up online in your Kindle library on Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com so if you accidentally delete a book from your Kindle you can re-download it wirelessly for free, anytime. How cool is that? You don't get that from a physical bookstore.
Navigation around the Kindle Keyboard is easy via the QWERTY keyboard and the various control buttons beneath the screen.
There are more than 750,000 books, fiction and non-fiction, in the Kindle store, including bestsellers and new releases, national and international newspapers, magazines, and blogs, plus there are more than 1 million FREE books like Dracula, Pride and Prejudice, Grimm's Fairy Stories and Treasure Island available for download.
Once you have downloaded books to your Kindle Keyboard you can organise them into collections and categories etc pretty much like a physical library.
The Kindle Keyboard is fitted with a long life rechargeable battery which lasts up to two months with Wi-Fi disconnected, and comes with a power adapter which supports voltages of 100 to 240 volts together with a micro-USB cable. Recharginging can be udertaken by connecting to a suitable mains outlet or alternatively you can unplug the USB cable from the adapter and charge your Kindle from a USB port on your PC or laptop. With Wi-Fi connected I found that charge only lasts for about ten days between charges. A message comes up to let you know when the battery is getting low.
Two Versions Of Kindle Keyboard
There are two versions of the Kindle Keyboard available:
- Kindle Keyboard Wi-Fi - You'll need access to a high-speed internet connection and wireless router for this model. You will need to set up the Wi-Fi on this before you can use it, but it's just a matter of pressing a couple of buttons to get connected.
- Kindle Keyboard 3G + Wi-Fi - The easiest option to get started with because there is no wireless setup. This model uses the same wireless signals that cell phones use so it's ready to use straight out of the box. (There aren't any connection charges as Amazon pays for the 3G connection).
